About the Event
A performative reading of a short story by Helen Dunmore. The Towel uses contemporary examples of performative reading to explore an intense experience of storytelling and listening to a spoken story delivered from the stage. There are no representational extras or theatrics just the act of watching and listening to someone performing the task of reading. Â The short story follows a young woman moving away from home for the first time and having to look after herself in a strange bedsit. This is similar to the performer herself and many students in the audience. "The Towel" looks at her life in real time following a 20-minute first encounter with the bathroom. The audience is invited to imagine the first moving away from home and the feeling of the young protagonist.
